Signs and Supplies
Each spring we have on hand approximately 5 signs to donate to newly adopted weed sites. We also have on hand 50 pairs of gloves and 50 weed pry tools that we can loan out to classes adopting a new site. The donation and loaning is done on a first come first serve basis. After the first year at an adopted site, we encourage agency hosts or teachers to purchase their own gloves, weed pry tools, and any additional signs so that other folks new to Pull Your Share can use the donated signs, and loaner gloves and pry tools. Contact agrweeds@mt.gov or call (406) 594-9171 to order your signs. To help with purchasing - Funding.
Pull Your Share signs (12”X18") and are made of high quality aluminum and last many years. Signs cost $45 per sign. The noxious weed on the sign can be changed to show the targeted weed at your site. Signs now come with a QR code that leads to the Pull Your Share website. Contact agrweeds@mt.gov or call (406) 594-9171 to order your signs.
Pull Your Share posters are 11” X 17” and on poster board. They are in many classrooms now. We are hoping that someday they will be posted in classrooms across our state to help raise a generation who knows how to identify noxious weeds and pull their share. Collectively we can have a significant effect in reducing noxious weeds. Poster are $2.00 each. Contact agrweeds@mt.gov.
Pull Your Share Stickers are generally given to students at the end of a classroom presentation or they can be given to students at the conclusion of an educational weed pull. Students place the stickers on their laptops, water bottles, etc. which help promote the Pull Your Share concept. Stickers cost $1.00 each. Contact agrweeds@mt.gov or call (406) 594-9171 to order your stickers.
The best gloves we have found for weed pulling are the Firm Grip model 5510-16 nitrile palmed gloves as seen in the photo above. If purchased in large quantities these gloves cost approximately $1.25 per pair. They can be purchased at a local Home Depot or online at Home Depot or other hardware stores. We have found that size large works with all of our students. We place left hand gloves in one 5 gallon bucket and right hand gloves in another 5 gallon bucket for convenience of distribution during weed pulls.
Weed pry tools cost between $7.00 to 14.00 approximately. We have found the shorter (Bloom Weeder 7163BL) weed pry tool at North 40 stores. The longer stainless steel weed pry tool, the Ames 2445300 Hand Weeder, can be purchased online at: Shelllumber.com Other gardening stores may also carry these tools. Both of the weed pry tools above have served us well. Purchase these well ahead of your weed pull as most stores do not carry enough to accommodate a bus full of students.
Plastic spotted knapweed model and other plastic noxious weeds can be purchased at the Montana State University Extension Store online at MSU Extension Store. Generally individual plants cost $6.50 and a package of 12 plants cost $45.00. These plants are great for instruction. We hope that in the near future, Pull Share Posters and plastic noxious weeds will be in classrooms across the state so students know how to identify noxious weeds and pull their share.
Portable Outhouse. It is most convenient to adopt a noxious weed site that has a bathroom facility. If however, the site your class or group is adopting does not have a bathroom facility, you can rent a portable outhouse from a vendor in your area. We pay approximately $160 dollars for 10 days if we transport it. If the vendor transports the outhouse to and from the site, there is an additional mileage charge. Under one 10 day rental, we have used our rental outhouse at multiple weed pulls. The vendor cleans the outhouse when you return it.
