MSU Forage Specialist to Speak About Alfalfa Winter Kill at Farm Bureau Event:
HELENA, Mont. - To help area producers decide how to respond to major winter kill in alfalfa stands around Helena and surrounding areas, Lewis and Clark County Farm Bureau is hosting an event at 6 p.m. on June 12 at the East Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Dr. Goosey, Montana State University (MSU) Forage Specialist, will present information about winter killed alfalfa and alfalfa grass mixes. Topics will include:
- What causes winter kill to alfalfa?
- Will any of the alfalfa grow back?
- Should producers replant the same year of the winter kill?
- How long should producers wait to replant?
- What varieties of alfalfa seem to survive winter conditions better than others?
Seed companies will also be invited to share their outlook on alfalfa varieties, seed supply, and other options available too. For more information, contact Karl Christians, Lewis & Clark County Farm Bureau, 406-431-1580, or Jim Dusenberry, FSA Committee member, 406-459-3645.
