According to recent data, Montana ranks 1st among states in the production of certified organic wheat, and 2nd in organic production of all grains, peas, lentils and flax. This department is accredited to certify organic producers and handlers, both under the USDA National Organic Program and under International Standards Organization (ISO) Guide 65. Two types of cost share assistance available

Producers seeking to grow certified organic vegetables, dry peas, flax and other specialty crops will be able get partial reimbursement of the certification costs. For more information, see the news article. You can download the form to apply for cost reimbursements on non-specialty crops.

The Organic Trade Association has launched a new website with articles and tips about ways growers can transition into organic farming. Link

Publication, spreadsheets on transition decisions

Montana State University has issued MontGuide 200901AG to list some of the challenges during the transition from conventional to organic. Download the MontGuide.

In addition, the Montana Department of Agriculture recently developed spreadsheets to help farmers compare the economics of organic and conventional rotations and to model transition economics.
