Meetings to Raise Awareness on Organic Certification
HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Agriculture is launching an organic
grower awareness campaign with discussions this month in Fort Benton, Havre
and Shelby. The events, titled "Is it Time to Transition? - A Discussion
of Organic Production," will be held at:
-- Shelby, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at The Griddle Restaurant,
311 Main Street. Lunch provided.
-- Fort Benton, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Bob's Riverfront Inn,
1414 Front Street. Dinner provided.
-- Havre, 9-11 a.m. Friday, March 28, at the Bear Paw Development Corporation
meeting room, 48 Second Avenue near the train depot. Breakfast refreshments
provided.
Local organic farmers, grain buyers, members of the Montana Organic Association
and agricultural support staff will discuss opportunities that organic farming
can offer producers. Presentations will include the certification process,
economic information, challenges during the transition and best management
practices regarding soil health, rotations, weed control, and buffer requirements.
Organic growers will share experiences and buyers will explain the increasing demand for organic products. More events are being planned, including organic farm tours during the summer.
