Hay Hotline Links Montana Producers with Buyers

HELENA, Mont. — Hay and pasture production in Montana was excellent during an unusually wet May and June. Now that pastures are drying out in some areas, livestock producers may be looking for additional summer forage.

The Montana Hay Hotline links buyers and sellers of hay and pasture. Notices are placed on the hotline at no charge for the benefit of landowners, producers and livestock operators, says Nancy K. Peterson, director of the Montana Department of Agriculture.

The Hay Hotline has been in existence for more than a decade, Peterson notes. The hotline includes both county-by-county and neighboring state listings. It specifies the type of hay, bale configuration, certification and tonnage, as well as desired or available pasture.

Livestock and horse owners who need hay can visit the site at: www.agr.mt.gov/crops/hayfirst.asp. Producers who would like to list hay or pasture can provide their names and other information to the hotline by phone at (406) 444-2402, e-mail at agr@mt.gov, or fax at (406) 444-9442.
