Crop Biotechnology Topic of Nov. 22 Forum in Billings

HELENA, Mont. — The ability to add new traits to plants through biotechnology offers great potential but also raises questions regarding the future of agriculture and agricultural products, from the foods we eat to genetically modified plants grown for medicines or industrial uses.

The Montana Department of Agriculture, the Montana State University College of Agriculture and MSU Agricultural Experiment Stations will host a one-day forum to present the science of biotechnology and the regulatory process. The forum will be held November 22, 2004 at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center. For registration information, see the Montana Department of Agriculture website at www.agr.mt.gov.

Co-sponsors include the MSU Extension Service, Montana Farm Bureau Federation, Montana Grain Growers Association, Montana Farmers Union, Montana Agricultural Business Association and the Montana Seed Trade Association.

Rather than take a position on biotechnology, the forum is designed to provide information to assist individuals, agriculture groups and policy makers in making important decisions that will affect individual livelihoods and agricultural businesses in Montana.

A $10 registration fee includes lunch. Registrations must be returned by November 12. For additional information, contact Ron Zeller or Staci Peterson at the Montana Department of Agriculture, 406-444-3144.
