Site Registration Required to Label
'Montana Huckleberry' Products

A law designed to ensure accurate labeling of Montana huckleberry products went into effect on April 5, 2007, the date that Governor Brian Schweitzer signed SB 479, "An act regulating the description of Montana huckleberry products."

Any Montana company whose products' labels contain the words "Montana" and "huckleberry" (or "huckleberries") must comply with this law, regardless of where its product is sold. Affected companies must annually register their huckleberry source(s) with the department by October 1 using the registration form and a copy of the map with picking areas circled.

There is no fee to register, and the information provided to the department is confidential. Companies that fail to comply will be subject to penalties which may include a term of imprisonment not to exceed six months in the county jail or a fine not to exceed $500, or both.

For help with registering, contact the department at (406) 444-2402, or by email at agr@mt.gov.
