About us

The Montana Department of Agriculture Seed Program assures farmers, gardeners, and homeowners that seeds offered for sale in Montana are truthfully labeled for identity, contamination, and viability. The program encompasses license requirements, label requirements, seed dealer inspections, and seed sampling.

Seed Inspections

Inspections are conducted at seed facilities for compliance with licensing and labeling requirements. This program covers the inspection of all seeds sold in Montana, including alfalfa, wheat, barley, miscellaneous crop seeds, and small packages of flower and vegetable seeds.

Samples of seed are tested by the Montana State University Seed Lab for purity, germination, noxious weed seeds, restricted weed seeds, total weed seed content, and seed from other crops. Lab results are then compared with the label to see if the seed is within accepted tolerances.

Registered and certified seed grown in Montana must be inspected and tested using the standards of the Montana Seed Growers Association. The Montana Seed Law is Title 80, Chapter 5, Montana Code Annotated.
