Noxious Weed Trust Fund Grant Program

Orange Hawkweed

The Montana Noxious Weed Trust Fund (NWTF) grant program was established by the 1985 Montana Legislature to provide funding for the development and implementation of weed management programs.  Grant awards of up to $75,000 are available for noxious weed research projects, state and community education/development projects, and local cooperative - landowner cost share grants.  Additional information can be found in the Grant Guidelines.

Grant applications are submitted electronically through the WebGrants system at https://fundingmt.org.  All grant projects should complement and enhance the Montana Weed Management Plan and focus on state or county listed noxious weeds.  Grant funding is provided as reimbursement for completed project expenditures.  Grant funds may not be used for purchasing publications, biocontrol agents, or equipment; expenses related to application writing and presentation; capital improvement projects, indirect costs, or annual herbicide for cropland/CRP practices.

Assistance in completing an application can be received from the Department and organizations such as a local county weed district, extension office, university, or conservation district.  An organization must serve as the funding recipient for grant funds.  Select New Applications or Active Projects for additional information.

Applications are reviewed and presentations are made to the Noxious Weed Management Advisory Council, who then provide funding recommendations to the Director of the Montana Department of Agriculture.  Final funding is approved by the Director.
