In 2010, agriculture generated $2.6 billion in income on 29,400 farms and ranches – making it the largest industry in Montana. The beautiful landscapes, clean environment, continental climate, and hard working producers create superior agricultural products that are highly desired in the United States and other markets throughout the world.
Although wheat and beef account for about three-fourths of the state’s agricultural receipts, pulse crops such as peas and lentils are gaining significance as more farmers are diversifying their operations. Other crops include barley (#3 in U.S.), honey (#5 in U.S.), and oilseeds such as safflower and canola. Montana is also known for its hay, sweet cherries, sugar beets, and seed potatoes. The state's producers continue to innovate to add value to their products. Examples include beer, wine, pasta, cereals, candies, jams, and snack foods.
Montana currently ranks 5th in the U.S. for lamb production and 6th for wool production.
The average size of a farm or ranch is 2,068 acres.
Montana leads the U.S. in organic prouduction for dry peas, durum wheat, and spring wheat.
