2012 Crop & Rotation Economics Comparison Tool Available

HELENA, Mont. — The outlook for weather and market conditions presents Montana farmers with considerable uncertainty in 2012. Farmers may need to rapidly assess their options prior to planting. At present, malting barley and alternative crops such as peas, lentils, chickpeas, mustard, canola, and safflower appear to be economically competitive to wheat.

To assist farmers considering planting options for 2012, the Montana Department of Agriculture developed spreadsheets that allow farmers to compare the relative profitability of different crops and crop rotations. Spreadsheets were developed for both dryland and irrigated production and are highly customizable to allow farmers to make estimates that are reasonable for their farms.

If farmers want to insure pulse crops or other alternative crops, they need contact their crop insurance agent and sign up for multi-peril crop insurance by March 15. Farmers considering pulse crops or other alternative crops are advised to assess whether their fields may have residual herbicide in the soil that could damage the crops.

The 2012 Crop & Rotation Economics Comparison Tool can be downloaded from the department website at: www.agr.mt.gov/business/cropandrotationtools.asp.
