HELENA, Mont. — Montana ranchers Brett and Kay DeBruycker of DeBruycker Charolais will travel to Russia soon to market Montana purebred beef cattle on behalf of Montana ranchers.
The DeBruyckers will join counterparts from Colorado and Kansas on the October 2-12 mission led by the Montana and Colorado Departments of Agriculture and the Kansas Department of Commerce.
While in Russia, DeBruyckers will attend the Golden Autumn Livestock Exposition, visit with Russian beef producers about U.S. beef genetics and tour farms and ranches in the regions to see first-hand what Russian beef production looks like. One farm the delegation will visit will be Angus Genetics of Russia, a relatively new operation that purchased the foundation of their herd from Angus cattle producers in Minnesota.
During the past two years, Montana producers and companies have had some success selling livestock genetics to Russia. Like many seed stock ranches in Montana, DeBruyckers wish to expand their marketing efforts overseas.
"The Russian beef industry is in its infancy, after relying for many years on dairy breeds for the country's beef. It is exciting for Montana to be in on the beginning stages of this transformation with our reputation as a leader in beef breeding stock," said Ron de Yong, director of the Montana Department of Agriculture.
This is the second trip to Russia on behalf of Montana ranchers that the department has conducted in 2010. In May, agriculture staff along with colleagues from Colorado and Kansas traveled to Russia to conduct market research and build relationships with Russian producers, industry representatives and government officials.
This trade mission is made possible by funding from the USDA Market Access Program through U.S. Livestock Genetics Export Inc. To learn more about the export organization and USDA program funding, visit www.uslge.org.
